Brief History of Mahoo Girls Secondary School

Mahoo Girls Secondary SchoolMahoo Girls Secondary “The best girls school in Taita Taveta County” started on June 2009 with a population less than 16 girls and later around 50 students. Mr.Kanza Francis acting principal assisted by Mr. Mwachala and Lydia Were and administration – Mr. Makange

The compound was a bare ground with no trees, no fence and with four classes Eastern block current deans office as the principal’s office, Chairs and desks donated by KWS, CDF and KPA. Mama Mary the only cook, cooked lunch on the open enduring rains and hot sun. Towards the end of the year TSC posted a principal Mrs. Grace Lesilale. With a strong prefect body under the leadership of Emily Wanjiku the head girl up to 2012, discipline and high moral standards enhanced. Students now do practical’s from the school’s laboratories initially designed to be classrooms, school fence and gate constructed. In 2017 a new principal deployed. Development including modern kitchen, a hall, additional toilets, teacher’s quarters, CCTV camera, WIFI- connectivity, white boards in classes, computers by courtesy of Ministry of Education achieved by the school in the recent years.

Current Situation

10 best Schools in Kenya

  • With a population o 351 girls to TSC has only posted 7 teachers so far. This school has made the school to have a very big wage of S BOM teachers. So we cannot do much with parents funds because of this.
  • There is only one functional dormitory which was meant to house 160 girls. It now houses to 351 girls. So congestion is at a rate of 101%. Even after construction of a dormitory extension courtesy of the Ministry of Education grant of one million, the whole population still uses the same ablution area. So girls waste a lot of the the same facilities in
  • Porous fence — our fence is very porous. However much we renovate, there are panya routes all over, goats and dogs always invade. It has also brought security and threats of indiscipline. Some p friends and neighbours sneak in foods, drugs and phones through same.
  • Lack of staff quarters. – Challenge for effective supervision of preps because there are few teachers who live in the school compound.
  • House for Matron — The matron is also housed in one of the cubes in the dormitory so sharing the same ablution facilities with the girls.
  • No functional library. – However, the teachers have donated their staff room to be used as a library. So currently they have no staff room

Achievements

  • We are now fully two stream school classrooms courtesy of NG CDF and other donors.
  • A new dormitory of capacity of 120 girls is under construction courtesy of NG CDF be ready.
  • A great team of teachers, young and energetic, trained in ICT integration courtesy of GESCI – ADSI programmes.
  • Fully equipped computers lab with 12 functional desk tops, 3 laptops, 4 projectors with WIFI Connections.
  • Very supportive parents. — we have wonderful parents. 90% of our parents turn up for meetings and fully support school programmes.
  • Other stakeholders like suppliers, banks, neighbours and everyone else have been very supportive to the school in the last 10 years. They are truly part of us. Helping us even in the general discipline of the girls.
